BSRLM MAILSERVER
A mailserver has been set up for BSRLM (British Society for Research into
Learning Mathematics), to act as a fast forum for communication and debate.

ILI:  INTERNATIONAL LITERACY INSTITUTE
The new International Literacy Institute (ILI), jointly sponsored by UNESCO
and the University of Pennsylvania, opened in September 1994 at the
University of Pennsylvania, USA.  ILI will mainly focus on developing
countries and may have some activity in the area of adult
numeracy/mathematics.

ALM ON RADIO
Interviews with Diana Coben, ALM Chair, about ALM were broadcast on:
'Education Matters' July 25 1994 on BBC Radio 4 and 'The Learning World'
September 1994 on BBC World Service.

FIRCROFT ON TV
ALM member Joan O'Hagan and adults learning mathematics at Fircroft College
(venue of the first ALM conference in 1994 and the initial meeting in 1993)
featured in 'Numbed By Numbers', shown on BBC1 on 5 March 1995 in the 'Who
Learns Wins' series.

PDME-3: POLITICAL DIMENSION OF MATHEMATICS EDUCATION
Conference,  24-28 July 1995 in Bergen, Norway, on 'The Political Dimension
of Mathematics Education:  3' (PDME-3).  Key themes:  gender/race/class
issues; politics of numeracy; anti-racist mathematics education;
deconstruction of mathematical knowledge;  mathematics for the masses.

ICME-8: INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS ON MATHEMATICAL EDUCATION
The ICME-8 conference will be held in Seville, Spain, 14-21 July 1996.
ICME is a commission of the International Mathematical Union.  The
programme will include a wide variety of scientific activities and an
extensive cultural and social programme for delegates - an opportunity to
exchange views and discuss new ideas about the basis of mathematical
education in an international setting.

RECENT EVENTS
MATHEMATICAL ABILITY OF THE ADULT NUMERACY STUDENT
Dr Joy Cumming of Griffith University, Australia, recently gave a talk on
'The Mathematical Ability of the Adult Numeracy Student' on 18 January 1995
at the Institute of Education, University of London.  Her recent work
includes an evaluation of different models of adult literacy and numeracy
provision and she is currently working on the concept of numeracy.

ADULT MATHEMATICAL LITERACY
A conference on Adult Mathematical Literacy was held in Arlington,
Virginia, USA, in March 1994 to  identify and discuss issues concerning the
lack of mathematical literacy skills facing the US adult population.

OTHER  ORGANISATIONS

ANPN ADULT NUMERACY PRACTITIONERS NETWORK
The US Adult Numeracy Practitioners' Network (ANPN) was established last
year and will meet in Boston in April 1995.  ANPN publishes 'The Math
Practitioner: Newsletter of the Adult Numeracy Practitioners Network'. A
report of the ALM founding conference by ALM's Kathy Safford is in the last
issue.

CAMET (IRELAND)
The Centre of Advancement of Mathematics Education in Science and
Technology CAMET (Ireland) is engaged in mathematics education research.
The purpose of the Centre is to improve mathematics education at all levels
through advanced study and research, curriculum development and teacher
training.

ISGEm  INTERNATIONAL STUDY GROUP ON ETHNOMATHEMATICS
ISGEm was founded in 1985 under the guidance of the Brazilian
mathematician, Ubiritan D'Ambrosio who coined the term Ethnomathematics to
indicate the influence of sociocultural factors in the creating, teaching
and learning of mathematics.

IN MEMORIAM
We were very sorry to hear of the death of Professor Stieg Mellin-Olsen of
the University of Bergen, Norway.  Professor Mellin-Olsen was author of
'The Politics of Mathematics Education' and founder of PDME the Political
Dimension of Mathematics Education.  We are all the poorer for his passing.
