Theme of the Conference:
"Bildning" and/or training
| Bildning is a central concept in debates about school and university. The meaning of the Scandinavian term bildning is difficult to capture because it expresses so many different perspectives and meanings. As there is no equivalent in English, it defies precise translation. The word comes from the German bildung, which has its roots in the Greek paideia. The literature in English contains the terms liberal education, general education and popular education, but none of these terms corresponds to the Scandinavian word. |
|
While the aim of education is a
specific and limited competence for studies and work, bildning is
aiming to change the whole person. Education has only outer tools for
measuring, while bildning always has to be related to single
individuals or groups and their specific prerequisites and wishes. |
|
But
bildning is not alltogether subjective. There are also different
outer outcomes for the process of bildning. The debate is vivid
about what a person need to be identified as having bildning. Bildning
demands for example to give direction in life. It demands therefor
differentiation and one can say the opposite to specialisation. |
